As I sit here this morning reading about the shootings in Arizona I am infuriated by the callous comments of Fred Phelps, the Pastor of Westboro Baptist Church. In the video posted by MSN, Mr. Phelps said and I quote "god sent the shooter to avenge the nations sins." "Thank God for the violent shooter." Phelps proclaims "We will remind the living that you can still repent and obey. This is ultimatum time with God.
For those of you that don't know of Pastor Phelps, he is the leader of the Westboro Baptist Church. This is an anti gay church out of Kansas. This church is known for picketing the funerals of fallen U.S. soldiers and gay gatherings. Now the members of this church intend to picket the funerals of the 9 year old girl and the 5 others who were killed in the attack in Arizona on Saturday.
I just cannot understand how this man can actually call himself a man of God and still prescribe to these views. To the best of my knowledge God is about love and forgiveness, not about condoning the shooting of innocent victims! And not about compounding the pain that these families are going through.
Pastor Phelps is doing nothineg more than compounding the violence that seems to be sweeping our country.
